Oatmeal Cookies, How Do Yours Stack Up?

Mmm....Oatmeal cookies. They really hit the spot. Not too sweet....not too, I dunno....just not too anything....they're just right. Chewy and satisfying.

How many times have you made that particular Oatmeal Cookie...you know the recipe...it's on the box of oatmeal and claims to be the "vanishing" type. hmmm...kinda wishin there were people other things in life that were the vanishing type...but that might be a discussion that would fall under the TMI category

My intention was not to make these same ole cookies....again. I wanted to try a new recipe. One with peanut butter and chocolate chips....yaaaaa.....a triple threat. Doesn't that sound wonderful?

Thats what I thought

So, there I was, bouncing around the kitchen, pulling out all the arsenal when in wanders my oldest child.

"Whatcha making, mom?"

enthusiastic reply: "Oatmeal cookies with peanut butter and chocolate chips!"

whiney childish response: "What?! Why are you putting all that other stuff in them????"

confused, trying-to-be-convincing answer: "Because it would be really good?"

whine pitch that only a teenage daughter can accomplish: "Why don't you make them the way you usually make them, mom? Those are my faaaaaaaavorite cooooooooookie"

Big sigh .oO(damn....how can I not? but I want to make this new cookie.....well shoot...they are her favorite. I can make the others another time).

resigned acceptance: "Ok, fine. Do you want to help me?"

sooo....I realigned my ingredients and set aside the oatmeal container lid and got busy. Although now that I'm here, sharing a well known recipe with you....I've discovered that I'm out of oatmeal. Which means, I no longer have the oatmeal container. Which means, I don't have the recipe. Sooo...I searched for it and found it on the Quaker Oats website

Vanishing Oatmeal Cookies

1 cup (2 sticks) softened butter
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
1 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp salt
3 cups oats
1 cup raisins

Preheat your oven to 350'

In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugars together until smooth. Add the eggs and vanilla and continue beating until well blended.

In another bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, cinnamon and salt. Add to the butter mixture and stir until blended. Stir in the oats and raisins.

Drop by the spoonful unto a parchment paper lined cookie sheet (for easy clean-up or just use an ungreased cookie sheet) about 2" apart

btw....blogger thinks that "ungreased" is not a properly spelled word. 

Bake for about 10 - 12 minutes, or until nice and golden brown. Let sit on the cookie sheet for a minute before removing them to a wire rack to cool completely.

If you can't wait that long....all the better

  7. This was a real trip down memory lane for me. My mom LOVED oatmeal cookies. Too much maybe. I think I ate so many as a kid that I've only made them a couple of times since I left home. LOL But, to this day, even a whiff of oatmeal cookies sends me right back to my childhood. :)

  8. I know that phrase very well, Why don't you just stick to the classic recipe, why do you have to change things all the time?
    I bet they're good the same, but unless you try new things you'll never know what you're missing.

  12. Heh, that's the recipe I always use myself. It's good! The cookies look great, although *I* would have liked the peanut butter and chocolate. ;)

  13. i find that the oatmeal raisin cookie disappears even more quickly than the chocolate chip cookie in my house. these look quite scrumptious--all they're missing for me is some butterscotch morsels! :)

  16. LOVE oatmeal cookies - and I always put chocolate chips in them, and sometimes a little grating of nutmeg. Once, I made them with some shredded coconut as well as chocolate chips -- my kids HATED them, but my husband and ate all 3 dozen in about 2 days...

  18. Oatmeal cookies are by far my favorite type of cookie. Although I wouldn't argue with peanut butter in them either. These look so chewy! The only way to have them.
